10 Signs You've Outgrown Your Home

Few people live in their first home for the rest of their life. Here are the signs it's time to sell.

If you're anything like most homeowners, there will come a time when your current home no longer feels right for you. How do you know if it's time to sell your current home and buy a new one? Here are ten signs you've outgrown your current home:

  1. Change in Family Size
The addition (or return) of children, a spouse, an aging relative, or even furry friends can quickly make your home feel overcrowded. Perhaps your children are old enough to need their own space, and squeezing into that two-bedroom apartment just isn't going to work anymore.

You might also want to start looking for a new home after your children leave the nest. Downsizing to a smaller home will reduce your expenses and set you up for a more comfortable retirement.

  2. There's Stuff Everywhere
You may have started out in your current home as a young adult with little more than your clothes and a bed. Now, however, you can't walk around your home without tripping over or running into stuff. You've acquired extra furniture and hobby equipment, had countless life experiences complete with photos and souvenirs, and had to buy an entire wardrobe of work clothes.

Cleaning out the closets and cupboards can only do so much, and parting with everything just isn't realistic. Upgrading to a home with more storage space will free up some room in your living spaces and make them feel much more comfortable.

  3. Major Life Changes
Marriages, divorces, blended families, boomerang kids, career changes, and changes in your financial situation can all make you feel like you need a change of scenery. Moving into a new home that suits your new life can help you better adapt to your change in circumstances.

  4. Your DIY Projects Never Happen
If you've been living in your home for a while and have done nothing to make the space unique and personal, it may be time to move on. The home might not be a good fit for your lifestyle and tastes.

  5. You're Always Doing Yard Work
While having a yard is nice, it comes with a lot of maintenance work. If you don't enjoy it, it takes too much of your time, and you don't want to pay someone to do it, it may be time to move to somewhere with fewer landscaping tasks to be done.

  6. Your Home Doesn't Appeal to You Anymore
Every home has its quirks, but you shouldn't spend all your time at home wanting to change or avoid them. If they can't be remedied by remodeling or you don't want to invest the time and money it would take to fix them, it may be time to leave them behind.

  7. Your Home or Neighbourhood Doesn't Fit Your Lifestyle
Your home should help you pursue the things you want in life. If your lifestyle has changed significantly or you made some sacrifices when you first moved in, consider finding a new home that facilitates your desired lifestyle. For example, if your current space can't accommodate all the guests you'd like to entertain, a larger home with a dining room, patio, or luxury kitchen might be a better fit.

  8. You're Getting Lots of New Neighbours
If your neighbourhood is in a hot market with a lot of outside interest and new buyers coming in, it might be a good idea to think about selling soon. If you do, you'll make the most of the investment you've made in your home.

  9. You Spend Lots of Time Somewhere Else
If you're always hanging out in a different neighbourhood or constantly looking for excuses not to hang out at your own place, you'd probably be happier elsewhere. Consider buying a new home that more closely resembles the places you've been enjoying lately.

  10. You're House Hunting Even Though You're Not Officially Looking
If you spend tons of time looking at other homes online and daydreaming about your perfect home, the home you have is clearly not the one you really want. Take this as a sign to start looking for a home that will make those dreams a reality.

Acknowledging when your current living space no longer fits is the first step toward a happier life for you and your family. It can be hard to part with a place where you've made so many memories, but being honest and objective about your situation will help. Things change, and if your current home isn't meeting your needs, it's time to move on.
