Considering the many challenges the industry is facing, agent recruitment is more important than ever, especially with so many experienced REALTORS® leaving the profession. The good news is that the workforce is rapidly changing.

With millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) and Gen Z (born after 1997) emerging as dominant generations in the job market, this opens up a new opportunity for brokerages to bring in these young professionals and provide them the foundation to begin a long and prosperous real estate career at their agency. However, you must adapt your recruitment strategy to attract and retain these age groups, as they bring unique skills, values, and expectations to the workplace.

Let's explore some recruitment strategies for attracting Gen Z and millennial agents:

  • Highlight Purpose and Social Impact

One characteristic that resonates with most millennials and Gen Z is the desire to make a difference in their career. Therefore, one of the best ways to attract millennial and Gen Z talent is to demonstrate how working in real estate can make a positive impact. Real estate agents help people find homes, often playing a pivotal role in their clients' lives. It can be helpful to emphasize the emotional rewards of the job and show how agents contribute to their communities.

To better appeal to millennials and Gen Z, brokerages should highlight any social responsibility initiatives they support in their messaging, such as helping first-time homebuyers, community involvement, or sustainability efforts in real estate development.

  • Offer Flexibility

Both millennials and Gen Z highly value flexibility in their careers, so offering options for remote work or flexible schedules is a key way to appeal to these groups. Real estate is inherently flexible, as agents are often free to manage their own schedules. However, agencies can go further by offering digital tools, enabling agents to work seamlessly from anywhere.

Cloud-based software, mobile apps, and a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) platform that allows agents to manage listings, clients, and leads from their phones or laptops are essential for recruiting tech-savvy millennials and Gen Zers. If your brokerage isn't current with the latest technology, this could deter these young agents from joining your agency and instead cause them to join your competitor, who offers a more up-to-date tech stack.

  • Use Social Media

Millennials and Gen Z live on social media, making it a prime avenue for recruiting efforts. Platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and even TikTok can be powerful tools for reaching potential recruits. Posting behind-the-scenes content about what it's like to work at your agency, agent testimonials, success stories, and community involvement initiatives can help create a positive image of your firm.

Engaging directly with prospective agents on social media — by commenting on their posts or responding to questions — can build relationships with talent before they even apply for a job. Additionally, offering webinars or live Q&A sessions on social media platforms can attract interest from those considering a career in real estate.

  • Emphasize Mentorship and Career Development

These two generations are also keenly interested in learning and growing throughout their careers. Offering clear paths for career advancement and personal development can be a major draw for younger agents. Brokerages can implement mentorship programs, pairing new agents with experienced professionals who can guide them through the industry's challenges.

Additionally, ongoing training in negotiation, sales techniques, technology, and digital marketing will improve agent performance and help attract recruits who want to develop their skill sets. For millennials and Gen Z, the opportunity to grow and evolve in their roles is often more important than financial compensation alone.
