You're comparing pricing sheets. You're looking at design samples. You've probably already got a favorite. That's normal — switching website providers usually gets treated like any other vendor decision, weighed on cost and looks.
Here's the problem: it isn't just a design decision. It's an SEO event. And if nobody's paying attention to that part, you can lose leads for weeks before you even realize what happened.
Your current site didn't earn its rankings overnight. Every indexed page, every backlink, every piece of content that shows up in a search result — that's years of accumulated value, and a sloppy migration can wipe out a good chunk of it in a matter of weeks. So before you sign anything, get straight answers to the questions below.
Sales demos are built to show off features. They're not built to walk you through what happens to your existing search equity once the switch flips. That part's on you to raise — and "we'll take care of it" isn't an answer.
Every page currently ranking in Google needs a properly mapped 301 redirect pointing to its new counterpart. Redirect everything to your homepage instead, or skip redirects altogether, and you're telling search engines those pages are simply gone — ranking history included.
Ask directly:
Is every indexed URL getting its own redirect, or is this a blanket redirect?
Who's actually building that redirect map, and who checks it before launch?
Where do agent pages, listings, and community pages fit into that plan?
Community pages, agent bios, and listing content tend to drive more organic traffic than people expect—and they're also the first things to get cut or rewritten during a rebuild. Lose that content, or have it rewritten without a plan, and the traffic it was pulling in goes with it.
The riskiest window isn't launch day — it's the weeks right after. Search visibility can drop sharply within 30 to 60 days of a platform change when something in the migration goes wrong. A provider that knows what they're doing will be tracking:
Search Console indexing status and crawl errors
Where your keywords land, page by page
Organic traffic and lead volume against your pre-migration numbers
Ask what happens if rankings drop after launch — specifically. A vague answer here is the red flag. If a provider is confident in their process, they should be able to tell you exactly how they'd spot and fix a post-launch SEO loss, not just reassure you that they will.
This isn't an argument against switching providers. It's an argument for switching with your eyes open. Know what your current website is producing, get real answers to these questions, and then decide whether the new platform actually saves you anything.
